AQUATIST
Strong Water

Concept: Gerhard Zsambok. Realisation: Christian Schmidt

Thanks to those cartoons of people held aloft on the crest of a whale’s spout, you probably know that a jet of water is capable of holding an object in space.  But you may not realise that such is the power of the attraction between the water spout and the ball, that even when the spout moves, dips or even bends the ball continues to hang suspended on the water's peak.  The Aquatist uses this effect for breath-holding excitement.

The sculpture consists of six angled jets each individually operated by lever.  As the operator moves the levers up and down The Aquatist follows his instructions.  After some practice a skilled operator can build up an accelerated momentum that allows the ball to leap from one jet to the next until the final goal is reached.  Miss a jet and the ball falls and rolls back to the starting position for another attempt.
